Connect to your server

Sign in to a Linux server over SSH using its IP address and root login, and change the password.

Most servers are managed over SSH, a secure way to type commands on the server from your own computer.

What you need

  • The IP address and root login from your server page. See Find your server login.
  • A terminal. On Mac and Linux this is built in. On Windows, use Windows Terminal or PuTTY.

Connect

  1. Open your terminal.

  2. Type the command, replacing the address with yours, and press Enter:

    ssh root@192.0.2.10

  3. The first time, it asks whether you trust the server. Type yes.

  4. Enter the password when asked. Nothing appears as you type; that is normal.

Change the password

Once you are in, type passwd and follow the prompts to set a new password. Choose a long one you do not use anywhere else.

If you cannot connect

  • Check the server is running on the server page. If it is stopped, start it.
  • Check you typed the IP address exactly.
  • Wait a few minutes after a first order or a reinstall; the server needs time to start.
  • Still stuck? Contact support with your server name.
